One of the big surprises on Netflix last year for me was 'Another Self'. In Turkish, it's called Zeytin Ağacı (Olive Tree). And I wasn't the only one; it was hugely popular in Turkey. It was a hit when it came out and led to a significant increase in demand for family constellations.
I was impressed by how family constellations were depicted and introduced to a wider audience. Flashbacks to past events that still leave their mark on the present day are very sincerely portrayed. Painful themes such as the Greek/Turkish "population exchange" in the 1920s, domestic violence, and discrimination against minorities are not avoided. Most episodes were filmed in Ayvalık, a beautiful region on the Aegean coast, from where I have many fond memories. And of course, it's also just a soap opera, the Turkish way, with beautiful people, vibrant colors, and a strong sense of drama!
